Long ago the members of the striking circus family Carré traveled throughout Europe with their horse play and from 1864 also visited the Netherlands. The cordial welcome that the circus receives here is reason for Oscar Carré to make Amsterdam the home port and to have a stone palace built on the Amstel in 1887.
